Our highly commended BHS riding school offers fun and engaging lessons for anyone age 3+.
Arriving for your first lesson

What to wear
Specialist riding equipment is not needed for beginner level but we ask that you follow our guidance when you attend your lesson:
- Wear non flappy clothing
- Shorts are not permitted
- Tops should cover shoulders
- Remove all jewellery
- Long hair should be tied back
- Gloves are recommended

Getting started
We will will ask you to complete a client registration form and induction notice which will tell us what your experience with horses is and also any medical conditions that we need to know about (this may affect the horse we put you on). An instructor will then find a hat to fit you and your lesson will start shortly after that.
Please note that if you have a medical condition or any additional support needs please let us know in advance so we can be prepared and put measures in place if required.
Please note
- Photography and video recording of any kind is not permitted
- We love dogs, but please leave yours at home or safely in the car
- Please remain on site whilst your child or person in your care is riding
- Be aware that this is a working yard so take care when entering the yard from the car park and be aware of uneven surfaces.
BHS Certificates
Throughout the year we hold training events for BHS Pony Stars, Challenge Awards, Ride Safe and training towards the BHS stage exams including the opportunity to have your exam here at Stainsby Grange.
Lesson Options
We offer lessons for riders from age 3 to adults, offered on a private, semi private or group basis at 30,45 and 60 minute durations.
Lessons can be booked with us online and are available Monday-Saturday.
Pony Parties
Why not treat your child to a super fun pony party at Stainsby Grange! Pony Parties are suitable for 6 to 8 children (£20/each) and include:
- 30 minutes fun games lesson
- 30 minutes grooming and pony pamper session
- Pony Party Rosette for each child
- Use of the party room (party food and cake not included)
We kindly ask you review the Yard Rules before joining us
We ensure our horses are well trained and ready to give you the best ride during your lesson but must recognise that even the calmest of horses can be unpredictable and riding is a risk sport.
For your safety and that of our staff as well as the horses, we ask all clients and visitors to the yard to take care and follow the safety rules listed below.
Photography and video recording of any kind is not permitted without the prior permission of the riding school staff. If you wish to take photographs of your child on horseback, please speak to your riding instructor who can arrange for you to take photographs at the end of the lesson. For child protection, social and religious reasons we do not allow any photography or video recording of any of our group lesson
- Young children must be supervised at all times
- A riding hat of the current safety standard must be worn at all times when riding and when working around all horses and ponies. See the BHS current standards here.
- Suitable footwear must be worn whenever you are near or riding the horses
- Dogs are not permitted on the yard
- Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the yard
- Please do not feed the horses without permission from your instructor; it can lead to negative behaviours or cause serious medical issues.
- Do not enter any stable with a horse or pony without express permission from a member of staff
- Do not shout or run on the yard
- You must not enter any arena whilst a lesson is in progress without permission from the instructor
- If watching a lesson, please keep any noises and sudden movement to a minimum. Do not try and communicate with a rider whilst a lesson is in progress
- Prams and buggies are not permitted on the yard.
